Born and raised in California, Mr. Berz attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated with two Bachelors of Arts degrees in 3 1/2 years.
He then completed a Juris Doctor (JD) in law at the University of San Diego School of Law while simultaneously attending the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program, where he held “special student status” as a law student. His academic business focus was International Marketing and Organizational Behavior.
After graduation, Mr. Berz began work in the private sector in a management consulting role in-house with a large multinational American logistics corporation. His role was to identify and solve unidentified problems within the company at all levels, propose efficiency and growth initiatives, and work collaboratively to execute them. This was an early prelude to his work helping companies prosper in the digital environment.
Mr. Berz left a position as Assistant to the Executive Director for Community and Economic Development at the City of Oakland after several years to pursue a passion for African art.
He founded Berz Gallery of African Art in San Francisco, California. For 21 years, Mr. Berz oversaw all aspects of operations and staffing for 11 art galleries and became one of a handful of prestigious international galleries specializing in pre-1940 antique African art.
For its time, Berz Gallery of African Art became among the most technologically sophisticated, internet-based e-commerce operations in this niche industry. This includes ongoing direct email campaigns, social media marketing, e-commerce, online electronic custom auctions, and more.
Success in the e-commerce model led to Berz Gallery of African closing all brick-and-mortar galleries, ending international shows and events, and shifting the entire operation to a completely online model in the early 2000’s.
His company was among the first art dealer platforms to stage independent online auctions, build integrated cross-marketing platforms to draw new customers and leads, market in multiple languages for a global reach, and apply management consulting principals to an online environment, focusing on user behavior as the pillar of online success.
This model provided an impetus for an industry that had never embraced online sales due to the “tactile” or “visceral” nature of purchasing art to begin to focus more on online art sales. It also augmented Berz’s move full-time into the world of digital marketing and media.
Mr. Berz and his art gallery team became immersed in web design and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) The influence and market dominance of Google and other search engines was becoming clear, and the importance of mobile technology in e-commerce became obvious nearly from the outset.
Berz himself learned PPC models, software integration systems, and how to communicate with a young online community of freelancers who did not speak his language. Sales for the company were over $50 million.
Mr. Berz soon began to provide assistance and counsel to colleagues in the industry, eventually expanding his role to providing digital marketing solutions to colleagues in the Asian Art, Ancient Art, and Tribal Art markets.
Once Mr. Berz and his team began providing digital marketing services to non-art industry clients, Berz Digital Marketing was born. Mr. Berz permanently left the art industry in 2018 to devote all of his professional time to digital marketing for companies.
His early clients were primarily in health care and wellness, an industry, like art, that was slower to immerse more completely into online platforms to provide service and access to their clients. Andrew Berz is bilingual (English and Spanish), and at various stages in his development has been conversational or fluent in 6 languages. He and his family split their time between California and Toluca, Mexico.
He has been happily married to his wife Claudia for 22 years and they have a 14 year old son. He enjoys family, sports, food, spiritual practice, and as much time away from the screen as possible.
